The Malayan Sun Bear (Beruang Matahari in Malay), scientifically known as Helarctos malayanus, is named for the bib-shaped golden or white patch on its chest. As the world’s smallest bear species, they are known for their endearing appearance. Sun bears primarily forage for berries, figs, fruits, and insects, particularly beetles, termites, and ants. Their long, narrow tongues allow them to easily extract honey from hives, earning them the nickname “Beruang Madu” or “Honey Bear” in Malay. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species classifies the Sun Bear as “Vulnerable,” making it the second rarest bear species after the panda.
